In game one of a split doubleheader, Ozzie Albies hit a sacrifice fly with one out in the tenth inning to lead the Atlanta Braves over the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2.
ATLANTA — In the opening game of a split doubleheader on Saturday, Ozzie Albies hit a sacrifice fly with one out in the 10th inning to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
With a sacrifice bunt against Chris Roycroft (1-2), Zack Short pushed Adam Duvall, Atlanta’s designated runner at second base, to third base. Jarred Kelenic, who was 0 for 25 at the time, was walked by Roycroft prior to Albies’ game-winning fly ball to center field.
In the seventh inning, Eddie Rosario gave Atlanta a game-tying two-run drive. Since joining the Braves again on April 8 after beginning the season with the Nationals, he has hits in five of his last eight games. “Eddie! Eddie!” was being chanted by fans, he claimed.
“I feel fortunate,” Rosario remarked. I’d like to express my gratitude to Braves Country. I always enjoy hearing my name called.”
Rosario homered, but the Braves needed to find other ways to score. They had a season-high two sacrifice bunts in the game.
The squad has changed over the past few years, according to Braves manager Brian Snitker.
In the top of the tenth, the Cardinals had an opportunity to grab the lead but were unable to capitalize. Pierce Johnson (3-1) hit a double play that Alec Burleson lined into while Pedro Pagés was standing third base for St. Louis.
Right-hander Kyle Gibson of St. Louis gave up just one run and three hits in six and a third innings before the Cardinals’ bullpen lost a 2-0 lead.
After Travis d’Arnaud singled with two outs in the seventh inning, Gibson was taken out of the game. And then Rosario gave Ryan Fernandez a home run.
