For Robert, Philadelphia would probably need to move a significant haul, but Bellinger, while not cheap, shouldn’t need the same kind of prospects in exchange. Bellinger may be a better choice because of this. Although Robert is an intriguing player and, should he be acquired, would immediately improve the club, his inability to stay on the field carries a great deal of danger.
Bellinger carries some risk as well because he hasn’t played quite like the man that took home the MVP Award in 2019. Still, he would be a huge improvement, and the Phillies have reportedly called him, according Jim Bowden of The Athletic. The Chicago Cubs are reportedly listening to calls from Philadelphia and other teams, according to Bowden. “Teams that are interested in Cody Bellinger, such the Phillies, Braves, and Mariners, have also been heard from. Don’t be shocked if they choose to retool for 2025 if they falter out of the All-Star break.”
Even though they might not land the left-handed slugger, Bowden said it would be “surprising” if they failed to acquire an outfielder by the deadline. “It will be surprising if they don’t land a center fielder by the trade deadline.” According to all of these rumors, the question is not if, but when. After resurrecting his career with the Cubs in 2024, Bellinger has had another outstanding season. He is cutting.9 home runs and a 107 OPS+ are combined for 269/.331/.410 in 312 at-bats.
The season before, he blasted 26 home runs, his highest total since 2019. As they try to address their outfield problems, Robert seems to be the best alternative available if his price is too expensive.
