Pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver of the Atlanta Braves has changed his plans.
Pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver of the Atlanta Braves quickly changed his plans. He’s been called up by the Braves and is on his way to Arizona to join the team.
Originally, Smith-Shawver was supposed to throw on Tuesday night for Triple-A Gwinnett. Jason Reese was the first to report about X.
“AJ Smith-Shawver who was scheduled to make a rehab start with the Gwinnett Stripers tonight is instead on his way to Arizona!” Reese tweeted. “I believe this is due to being shorthanded in the bullpen.”
Atlanta Journal-Constitution Braves beat writer Justin Toscano verified the allegation. He’ll reportedly also be added to the Braves bullpen.
On the other hand, no information has surfaced regarding his anticipated presence at the game on Tuesday night. In any case, the Braves are able to remove a player off their lengthy list of injuries.
Smith-Shawver’s left oblique strain has kept him out of action since the end of May.
This season, he started for the Braves and pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up three hits, two walks, and four strikeouts. Before that start, he had just been called up from Triple-A.
He has a 3.64 ERA in seven major league games, 24 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings pitched.
On July 3, Smith-Shawver appeared for the Rome Braves. Pitching two innings, he struck out four batters while giving up only one hit—a solo home run. After his injury, this was his first time participating in a game.
The Braves made a number of roster changes just one day prior to Smith-Shawver’s call-up. The Braves optioned reliever Dylan Lee to Triple-A and summoned up Bryce Elder to start the game on Monday night.
One of the other recent changes to the Braves lineup is the return of outfielder Eddie Rosario.
Tuesday night marks the start of the Braves’ four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The game will begin with Chris Sale. It is planned to start pitching at 9:40 p.m. EST.
