Updates on Tyler Matzek and Michael Harris II’s injuries for the Braves.
Up until now, the Braves 2024 season has been characterized by injuries. Though I don’t think I’ve ever seen a squad so snakebit, there is still optimism that some of these men may be able to come back when it counts most.
After undergoing Tommy John surgery, Ian Anderson is gradually recovering. While he heals from a hip impingement, A.J. Minter has already started his rehabilitation assignment, and Michael Harris has resumed baseball activities after suffering a hamstring strain a few weeks ago. He might not have to wait long to start his rehab assignment, and I don’t think it will take him long to get back to the Braves.
As noted by Mark Bowman as well, Tyler Matzek is recuperating from inflammation in his elbow. He was placed on the injured list back in April, which is not good news for someone who had Tommy John surgery not too long ago. Matzek was getting pummeled and his velocity had dropped considerably. If things don’t take a significant turn for the better, I’m not sure where the Braves will fit him on the roster.
Despite the deluge of injuries, Atlanta has managed to weather the storm, sitting comfortably ahead of the Phillies in the NL East and leading the National League Wild Card race.
Reinforcements are on the way—that is, if the Braves can stay in the division race a bit longer. Alex Anthopoulos will be among the most assertive general managers during the trade deadline, and a number of important players will return from the injured list. He has always been one to take initiative during this time of year, and he is more aware than anyone of what this team needs.
