Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese both becoming All-Stars make the Magic.
Good morning, Champions! Once again, welcome to the Morning Win. I truly appreciate your reading today. We are grateful that you could spare some time for us. Happy Eve of July 4th, if you can say that.
Though I normally detest comparing Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese to Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, it’s becoming difficult to ignore them at this point.
According to ESPN, Clark and Reese were selected for the WNBA All-Star roster, making them the first two rookies selected for the All-Star game since 2014.
It is merited on both fronts. With her scoring, Clark has established a pattern that has made her one of the WNBA’s top passers. Even as a rookie, Reese is already by far the best rebounder in the league.
Johnson and Bird were some unique rookies, so I always hesitant to go there. In 1979–80, Bird, in his rookie season with the Boston Celtics, was a front-runner for MVP. Certainly, Magic Johnson was the team’s second-best player, only surpassed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of the Lakers, the eventual NBA champions.
I don’t believe that will be seen by Clark or Reese anytime soon. We’ll see. However, they are getting a little bit closer to that uncommon air on the court with these All-Star nods.
This is where that analogy does apply, even though it may not be appropriate at this time in terms of expertise. Like the careers of those two NBA legends, Reese and Clark appear to be intermingled all the time. They have been traveling together since the 2023 national championship game, often coming into conflict with one another but also raising the stakes with every encounter.
We hardly often come across two players whose paths appear to be so strangely intertwined. Throughout the history of sports, there are very few instances like this.
Here, Johnson and Bird are the clear favorites. What more is there, though? Candace Parker and Maya Moore? Both Tom Brady and Peyton Manning? And anybody else? Although the list is undoubtedly small, I’m sure I’m missing a few. It’s amazing that Clark and Reese are even being discussed in this environment.
It’s difficult for humans to be present in the moment. We’re trained to always be looking forward. What will happen next? What will happen next?
But with that, I want to encourage everyone to savor the present. Thank you very much. Enjoy it to the fullest. Shut up. Because this league has never seen anything like what we’re seeing.
