Turner’s birthday miracle helps the Phillies after Suárez’s setbacks.
Philadelphia On Saturday, Trea Turner acknowledged that he was overextending himself while Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and J.T. Realmuto were out.
But he accomplished more than enough on Sunday afternoon.
The Phillies overcame a 7-6 deficit to defeat the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park thanks to a clutch two-run single by Turner in the seventh inning. It was one of his three hits on his 31st birthday.
Though that was not the case in the series finale, the current thinking is that the Phillies’ outstanding pitching staff will have to shoulder the burden for a thin lineup.
Rather, Ranger Suárez, who had perhaps the worst start to his career, was saved by the improvised top of the order. Over 4 2/3 innings, the National League Cy Young Award candidate was blasted for six runs off of nine hits and two walks. In his 83 career starts, he did not record a single strikeout for the first time.
When Suárez left the game in the top of the fifth, the Phillies were behind four runs; this was a daunting goal for a team that had only managed four runs in two games since placing Harper and Schwarber on the injured list on Friday. For the whole season, Philadelphia has also failed to overcome a deficit of more than two runs.
However, the Marlins missed a double play that should have ended the inning, and Nick Castellanos trimmed the lead to one with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth and a two-run single in the sixth.
In the seventh inning, Marlins reliever Andrew Nardi walked the first two batters he faced, giving the Phillies even more lead. Turner’s game-winning two-out, two-run single up the middle was subsequently enabled by a flawless sacrifice bunt by rookie catcher Rafael Marchán.
