In the WNBA Rookie Rankings provided by CBS Sports, Angel Reese surpasses Caitlin Clark.
The WNBA has seen significant change this year.
The WNBA is seeing record TV numbers thanks to the entrance of former Iowa star Caitlin Clark and the rest of this rookie class. In 2023, 462,000 people watched WNBA games on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, CBS, ION, and NBA TV on average.
According to information released by the league, in the first month of 2024, that number almost tripled. In the first month of the season, 1.32 million people watched games on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, CBS, ION, and NBA TV on average.
Naturally, it seems to go down really well whenever rookies Clark and Angel Reese come together on the court. Since the Los Angeles Sparks and Houston Comets match on Memorial Day 2001 drew 2.44 million people, each of their last two games has been the most watched WNBA matchups ever.
2.25 million people watched the Indiana Fever’s 91-83 victory over the Chicago Sky on June 16 on CBS. Then, 2.30 million people watched the Sky’s thrilling 88-87 comeback victory over the Fever on ESPN this past Sunday.
In the most recent round of the developing Fever-Sky rivalry, Clark and Reese both turned in career-best performances. In a WNBA game, Clark became the first rookie in league history to score fifteen points or more, throw out ten assists or more, and make five or more 3-pointers. With 13 assists against the Sky, Clark also set the franchise record for assists in a single game for the Indiana Fever.
In the meantime, Reese finished with 16 rebounds and a career-high 25 points. It was her eighth straight double-double, raising her rookie record in the WNBA.
In the final 6:38 of the game, Reese scored 10 of her 25 points to help overcome a 12-point deficit. Among them was her game-winning bucket with 53.2 seconds remaining.
Clark and Reese have consistently been around the top of all WNBA Rookie Rankings thanks to this kind of play. Clark’s name is no longer at the top of the WNBA Rookie Rankings, according to CBS Sports’ most recent edition.
Rather, Reese is ranked #1 in Isabel Gonzalez’s most recent WNBA Rookie Rankings, published by CBS Sports.
It seems like there are just two players competing for the title of WNBA Rookie of the Year at this moment. After the season, Clark or Reese will win the hardware.
Here is what Gonzalez had to say about Clark, ranking No. 2 in her most recent WNBA Rookie Rankings.
Gonzalez’s top five players are as follows: Jacy Sheldon of the Dallas Wings at No. 5, Rickea Jackson of the Los Angeles Sparks at No. 4, and Kamilla Cardoso of the Chicago Sky at No. 3.
