‘Fit’ for Left-Handed Relief Pitcher: Philadelphia Phillies.
One of the top closers in baseball was named to the Philadelphia Phillies.
Up until this past Saturday, the Philadelphia Phillies had struggled in their previous ten games, going 4-6 in that time.
However, their win in Game 2 gives them a chance to win their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks and could get them back on track to turn their struggles around.
Expect an aggressive approach from Dave Dombrowski as the July trade deadline draws near. The Phillies have been successful for a reason, and a big part of that reason is the club he assembled.
Even though Philadelphia has the second-best record in baseball, there is still room for improvement. It appears like adding an outfielder and pieces to the mound is the best course of action.
The Phillies’ bullpen could use some work, but it’s not horrible. Dombrowski ought to be aiming to capitalize on that, especially if he has hopes of winning the World Series.
Tanner Scott was among the 13 trade candidates mentioned by Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, who also mentioned that Philadelphia would be a good fit for the left-hander.
“Despite not getting many chances to save games with the Marlins in last place, Scott is enjoying a fantastic season. With a 1.74 ERA in 31 innings, Scott is among the top 10 percent of MLB players in terms of average exit velocity, predicted batting average, whiff rate, and ground ball rate. The southpaw is a great rental option because this season, his final before free agency, he is making $5.7 million.
One of the most sought-after trade candidates on the market is anticipated to be the Miami Marlins closer. Moving him is almost a given, given that the Marlins are perhaps the worst baseball team.
Miami has even more incentive to deal with him because he will be eligible for free agency at the end of the season.
Scott doesn’t have many saves, as Feinsand suggests, but it isn’t because of anything he has done on the bump. Although there are concerns about him entering and pitching in high-stakes situations, his play has been so strong that there shouldn’t be many problems.
He has a 1.69 ERA, 260 ERA+, and 34 strikeouts in 32.0 innings pitched this season. He needs to walk 22 more times, but other than that, he’s been excellent.
The Phillies have the seventh-best bullpen ERA in baseball as a team, an impressive mark and part of their dominant play.
Still, adding an elite bullpen arm always makes sense for a contender, so look for them to be active on that front.
