Angel Reese, a rookie in the WNBA, makes double-double history.
Angel Reese, a forward with the Chicago Sky, created WNBA history by recording the greatest streak of double-doubles for a rookie in the league: seven.
The record was set on Thursday in an 83-72 home victory over the Dallas Wings by the former LSU standout. In addition to a career-high 18 rebounds, Reese scored 16 points.
When a player achieves a double-double in basketball, they must score in double digits in at least two of the five main statistical categories: steals, blocked shots, assists, rebounds, and points.
In the ESPN broadcast following the game, Reese stated, “I’m just happy we finally won, and at home.” “It’s certainly quite thrilling for me. I make an effort to be kind to myself and remind myself that I’m doing a good job. However, I still have a lot of room for improvement. I’m just happy to be in this league and eager to continue winning.”
According to CBS Sports, Reese broke the previous record of six straight double-doubles held by Tina Charles in 2010 and Cindy Brown in 1998. With 22 double-doubles, Charles continues to own the record for the rookie season.
With 26 games remaining and eight double-doubles this season, Reese still has a chance to match that total. At the moment, her averages per game are 12.4 points and 10.8 rebounds.
When asked about her achievement at a news conference following the game, Reese praised the strong rookies who came before her, mentioning Sylvia Fowles, another LSU alumna. When Reese was still in college, Fowles—who now owns the record for the most double-doubles (193) scored in a WNBA career—dubbed her “Miss Double-Double Queen”.
“Sylvia is my love. When I was at LSU, she was a tremendous mentor and a great person to me, Reese remarked. “I know she is going to be super proud of me.”
Her remarkable accomplishments come before Chicago’s eagerly awaited rematch with the Indiana Fever, who are captained by another outstanding rookie, Caitlin Clark.
