Jordan Love Rumors: After Aaron Rodgers, the Packers Want ‘Cleaner’ Contract Talks with the QB.
In their discussions with Jordan Love, the Green Bay Packers are utilizing the knowledge they gained from their prior contract negotiations with Aaron Rodgers.
As they continue to work out a new contract, the Packers want a “cleaner situation” with Love, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on the Saturday morning edition of SportsCenter:
He will most likely need to be in that class because of the state of the market and that large quantity. General Manager Brian Gutekunst is hoping to finish something before training camp. There’s probably some heat on him following the events surrounding Aaron Rodgers’ position years prior. They want his contract to be in a cleaner scenario.”
After winning MVP honors in 2020 and 2021 consecutively, Rodgers worked with the team to negotiate an extension. After the Packers’ playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, there was some conjecture that he may depart the team, but he declared that he would be joining them again in 2022.
Fowler wrote at the time that the Packers “decided to pause most business” until they sorted Rodgers’ position, as negotiations dragged on closer to the start of free agency. On March 15, one day before free agency opened, he formally signed a three-year, $150.8 million contract.
In March 2023, Love agreed to a one-year contract deal worth up to $22.5 million. Instead of selecting the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, the Packers were able to close the transaction.
Love, a first-round pick in 2020, was about to begin his first full season as the starting quarterback for the Packers, so it was a wise financial decision. After being well-known in 2023, he now has an excellent deal for the upcoming season.
Trevor Lawrence’s five-year, $275 million contract extension with the Jacksonville Jaguars, which includes $200 million in guaranteed money and $142 million in fully guaranteed money, most certainly set the market for Love on Thursday.
In terms of both total value and average yearly compensation ($55 million), Lawrence’s contract ties Joe Burrow as the highest-paid quarterback in the National Football League. Burrow received more money in completely guaranteed funds ($146.5 million) and total guarantees ($219 million).
Last season, Love guided the Packers to the NFC Divisional Round. Over the course of 17 starts, he completed 64.2% of his passes for 4,159 yards and 32 touchdowns.
