Veteran cornerback for the Eagles might be all the depth required at safety.
After battling injuries, Philly re-drafted a talented cornerback from their 2018 draft class who is currently receiving cross-training at safety and slot.
PHILADELPHIA: Avonte Maddox was a cornerback without a team for almost a month.
After letting him go on March 7, the Eagles eventually consented to have him back on April 4 for a one-year deal.
After being selected by Philadelphia in the fourth round of the 2018 draft, Maddox, who is now 28 years old, wasn’t too concerned about where he would live while he waited.
For me, it was just chill, he remarked. “I wasn’t really worrying too much about it. I spend much of my time with my family and friends during the off-season.
“I had a great relationship with Howie (Roseman), the general manager.” He assured me that I was always welcome to return here if things didn’t work out. Being here felt right. I’ve spent seven years in this place. As I live in Philadelphia, I feel at ease being in his building, surrounded by the players and coaches, and interacting with the organization.
When healthy, one of the NFL’s top slot cornerbacks is always a footnote. Throughout his career, Maddox has struggled with injuries, particularly in the last two seasons when he was only able to play in 13 of a potential 34 games.
He remarked, “I’ve been injured a lot.” I’ve also been focusing on attacking my body this summer to make sure I return as healthy as can. I think that this year is going really well for me.
I have had turf toe for the last two years, so I haven’t really been able to take part in OTAs or camp. I was able to properly take care of my body during the offseason this year, and now that I’m back to full health, I’m prepared to compete and take part in the OTAs.
Maddox, who spent the spring playing both safety and cornerback, may be a very useful versatile player.
It appears that most people anticipate—or at the very least hope—that Justin Simmons will arrive at the Eagles’ front door soon to save a safety group in need of depth.
The seasoned Denver Broncos safety is seen to be a fantastic scheme fit because of his history with Vic Fangio, the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. On the surface, players can make sense, but not always in the front office.
Though he was one of Fangio’s favorite defenders and had succeeded in the Miami Dolphins defense last season, linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel made sense, but the Eagles let him go to the Minnesota Vikings.
The Eagles have three starting safeties: Sydney Brown, Reed Blankenship, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Once Sydney Brown recovers from ACL surgery, he should see a big workload, but it might not be in time for the team’s opening game in Brazil.
The inexperienced Tristin McCollum and undrafted free agent Andre Sam are primarily involved after that.
It makes sense, then, for Maddox to train at safety. Additionally, James Bradberry is expected to be studying that role as well; but, he missed OTAs and only worked for a meagre two minutes on the first day of obligatory minicamp before suffering an injury.
He remarked, “You get a little slower as you get older.” “Aside from that, I’m also learning where the nickel and safety spots are.”
It might not be necessary for Simmons if he picks up on the safety location in particular effectively.
