Monday is Trea Turner’s return to the Phillies following a six-week absence.
Baltimore — According to manager Rob Thomson, the Philadelphia Phillies anticipate having star shortstop Trea Turner back on Monday.
Turner would become operational the next day, according to Thomson’s statement on Sunday, “unless something weird happens.” He suffered a left hamstring strain on May 3 and hasn’t played since then.
Before being placed on the disabled list, Turner played in 33 games, hitting.343 with 10 stolen bases.
Without him, the Phillies have continued to play well. They had an eight-game lead over the National League East going into Sunday’s series finale in Baltimore.
Monday is Philadelphia’s first home game since June 5 against San Diego, which comes right before the team leaves on a two-game trip to London to play the New York Mets. The Phillies played series in Boston and Baltimore after that trip.
Thomson remarked, “It feels like we’ve been gone for a month.”
While Turner was away, Edmundo Sosa performed admirably. On Saturday, he launched his fifth home run of the year.
“He’s enormous. I believe that he was viewed as a utility man by the baseball community over the past few of years. They’re viewing him like a shortstop right now,” Thomson remarked. “So his value is very high right now, as it should be because he’s played very well.”
Going ahead, Sosa should play some part as an infield backup, if not in the outfield.
“If he’s not playing every day, there’s nothing wrong with getting him some outfield work,” Thomson stated. “Just to see what it looks like, just to get him comfortable.”
Padres’ Manny Machado and Mike Shildt were dismissed from the game against the Mets.
NEW YORK In the sixth inning of Sunday’s game against the New York Mets, Manny Machado of San Diego and manager Mike Schildt were dismissed after the All-Star received a called third strike.
Plate umpire Adam Beck called out Machado on a full-count sinker from Adrian Houser that looked to be just low with San Diego trailing 7-2.
Frustrated, Machado slammed his bat, turned, yelled something to Beck, and was thrown out. When Shildt emerged from the dugout to dispute, he was also thrown.
Shildt was ejected for the 13th time this season, and Machado was ejected for the 11th time in his career.
