Joe Mixon Agrees to Three-Year Extension With Houston Texans
Cincinnati — Jordan Schultz reports that former Bengals running back Joe Mixon has agreed to a three-year contract extension with the Texans.
On Wednesday, the Bengals traded Mixon to the Texans. From the minute the deal was agreed upon, the former Pro Bowler hoped to clinch an extension with his former team.
$13 million of the $27 million three-year contract is guaranteed. Mixon should spend the next few years in Houston after receiving a good pay day.
The Houston Texans will not use Joe Mixon as a one-year rental player.
The AFC South franchise, which acquired the running back via trade from the Cincinnati Bengals this summer, announced on Thursday that the running back has inked a three-year contract extension, according to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the $27 million deal includes a $13 million guarantee.
Originally, Mixon was supposed to become a free agent following the forthcoming campaign.
Following Devin Singletary’s three-year contract signing with the New York Giants, Houston needed to address the running back issue this offseason. To that purpose, it acquired the top option from a rival AFC contender.
Following the Bengals’ second-round selection of him in the 2017 NFL draft, Mixon played for them for the first seven years of his career.
He ran for over 1,000 yards in four different seasons, including the 2023 season, and was a Pro Bowl selection in 2021. In addition to 52 catches for 376 yards and three touchdowns as a receiver out of the backfield, he finished the previous season with 1,034 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.
Although the Oklahoma product has only averaged 4.1 yards per rush, there have long been doubts about his ability to prolong plays. However, his versatility as a pass-catcher increases his value and enables him to make many contributions.
Mixon should continue to be a vital member of the Texans’ lineup for the length of this contract deal because he is only 27 years old.
Thanks to quarterback C.J. Stroud, the squad is coming off of an AFC South championship and he enters a competitive window that is wide open. Stroud’s rookie deal permits the front office to add players like Mixon this offseason. He was the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year and one of the greatest signal-callers in the league.
As Mixon will be a part of Stroud’s offense, he should have plenty of room to run because the aerial approach will prevent opposition teams from stacking the box against him.
