Is Dak Prescott leaving the Cowboys? Here are five quarterbacks who could replace him
The Dallas QB has yet to deliver the results to become real Super Bowl contenders
The Cowboys looked to Dak Prescott to help them end nearly three decades without winning a Super Bowl, but the soon-to-be 30-year-old never made the last push and ended up being a very expensive player for the team, taking up valuable room on the roster that could be used for other players.
The potential replacement quarterbacks for the Cowboys
By 2025, Dak Prescott’s time with the Cowboys may come to an end. Reextending his deal or making other changes would be extremely expensive for the salary cap and would allow Dallas to sign a new quarterback.
Prescott’s replacement may already be inside the house
The Cowboys shocked the NFL world last offseason by acquiring Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers. It was a fate few saw coming for the former No. 3 pick. Jerry Jones operated with complete autonomy, bypassing his front office staff to invest in a low buyout opportunity that only he found interesting. So with a year to learn the Dallas environment very well and be Prescott’s natural heir.
Admittedly, it’s a dire outcome for Dallas, but Lance probably deserves a little confidence. Again, he was the third pick and his opportunity never came. It’s a unique situation, and the Cowboys could capitalize if it all goes wrong.
Daniel Jones, an option the fans don’t want in Dallas
The New York Giants may opt to terminate Daniel Jones’ contract at the end of the season. While anything can and will happen in the NFL, all signs point to the Giants jumping ship sooner rather than later. Jones was pretty bad before his ACL injury last season, throwing two touchdowns and six interceptions in six starts.
Aside from the Giants’ magical 2022 postseason streak, which seems more like an aberration than a sign of what’s possible, Daniel Jones’ experience in New York has been largely negative. It’s been difficult for the Giants, really since Eli Manning left. New York simply lacks consistency year in and year out, largely due to their instability at the QB position.
Justin Fields is just as talented as Prescott
It seems quite expected that the Pittsburgh Steelers would reject Justin Fields’ $25.7 million contract option for the upcoming season, allowing the former first-round choice to become a free agent. In theory, Fields is Russell Wilson’s apparent successor in Pittsburgh. However, Fields might be inclined to hunt for a better place to live if he finds himself traveling for the entire season as anticipated.
This may be the Cowboys’ best opportunity to get a proven starter if Prescott departs. Derek Carr’s career included four trips to the Pro Bowl. He is a high-volume gunner with the ability to make spectacular plays and isn’t scared to make risky passes. But Carr’s first season with the New Orleans Saints was a bit of a bust. Although Carr wasn’t always to blame, the quarterback will always be held accountable when a strong team fails to make the playoffs.
