Gary O’Neil to Man Utd?! Red Devils interested in offering Wolves boss Old Trafford role as Sir Jim Ratcliffe considers coaching shake up
According to reports, Manchester United is considering hiring Wolves head coach Gary O’Neil for a possible position in the organization’s new coaching staff at Old Trafford.
Wolves are ready to sit down and talk to Gary O’Neil about a fresh deal as Manchester United circle.
The Midlands outfit appointed the former Bournemouth boss just days out from the start of the season and, following an exodus of players, were tipped to struggle. O’Neil though has them sat comfortably in mid-table and also made the last eight of the FA Cup.
His work, on a relatively low budget, has seen his stock rise further with Wolves just six points off United themselves. He’d already impressed last term by keeping Bournemouth afloat and O’Neil’s exploits have got Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s attention as he looks for ways to bolster the coaching ticket at Old Trafford.
ESPN reports that the Red Devils want to speak to the Wolves boss about a potential role in their coaching set-up – although it is unclear what form that would take. Erik ten Hag’s future in the United dugout is far from clear and the likes of Gareth Southgate and Roberto De Zerbi are being considered as replacements.
O’Neil has been informed of United’s interest, and senior members of the team are eager to talk with him about his future goals. Working under a head coach at Old Trafford could be an attractive option, but Wolves want to further reward their boss for his performance.
Matt Hobbs, their sporting director, recently stated: “That’s where this is going naturally—he’s done well enough to have that conversation.” The club’s plan will come up, and that’s when you need to have the open discussions about what it looks like moving ahead. We will undoubtedly find ourselves in that circumstance this summer.”
When Julen abruptly left, Wolves had to adjust swiftly. United currently has Lopetegui on its shortlist. In O’Neil’s debut game in command, United played well but lost 1-0 in the end. However, they were not awarded a late penalty.
When O’Neill took over Wolves in the summer, he signed a three-year deal. If United decides to extend an offer to him for a position at the team, they will have to pay compensation. Newcastle is requesting a large sum of money if Dan Ashworth accepts a position in Manchester, so Ratcliffe may already have to make multiple compensation payments.
Due to their uneven season, the team may not even make it into the top five, meaning they would not receive any Champions League cash.
