Wolverhampton Wanderers’ two-week break from Premier League action, according to Matheus Cunha, has come at the ideal time.
Wolves were eliminated from the FA Cup by Liverpool in a replay last week, therefore they are not playing in the competition this weekend. Now, Julen Lopetegui has two weeks to get his team ready for their Premier League encounter on February 4 against Liverpool.
This will allow Lopetegui to fully integrate Cunha and Wolves’ other recent additions into his philosophy. “It’s ideal; it will be crucial for us to comprehend the coach’s mindset,” Cunha remarked.
“We have very good staff who always create a very good plan for us. With new players, we need to understand it a little bit more to do everything that the coaches want.
“If we can put it on the pitch, we can win the next games. We need time to adapt and we can come to the next game much better.”
Cunha has only started one game for Wolves since his transfer from Atletico Madrid, making a further five appearances from the bench. Lopetegui has eased Cunha – who will become Wolves’ £43m club-record signing in the summer – into Premier League life and left him on the bench against Manchester City on Sunday.
The Brazilian forward was one of three substitutes introduced at half-time after Lopetegui admitted he got his team selection wrong. However, within 10 minutes of Lopetegui bringing on Cunha, Joao Moutinho and new signing Pablo Sarabia
“We cannot make mistakes against these big players in these big games,” Cunha said. The key thing to remember is that City performed admirably. We argued and wanted to play, but at that particular moment, it was all about City.
