Toti Gomes interview: Wolves defender on being mentally strong and taking his opportunity under Gary O’Neil
We look at Toti Gomes’ remarkable rise in an exclusive interview with the Wolves defender, which is enhanced by commentary from his manager and teammates.
Last time out in the Premier League, Wolves’ breakthrough goal against Fulham was brought about by the deft footwork of defender Toti Gomes. Using his left foot, he managed the ball and used his right to send it to Rayan Ait-Nouri.
It was not even his finest assist of the season despite two flawless touches. When he found himself on the right wing against Newcastle in October, he dropped his shoulder to beat his defender and threaded the ball through to Hee-Chan Hwang.
“It was a good moment,” Toti tells Sky Sports. Not what you might expect from a 6’3″ defender? He disagrees. “Sometimes I do this in training,” he insists. “I was in a position more at the front of the pitch and I knew I could do it. I was confident I could do it.”
Toti’s confidence has been well-founded; he has become one of the season’s biggest surprises. The £1 million summer acquisition from Estoril four summers prior, the 25-year-old Portuguese defender did not even start for Wolves in the opening lineup.
Since then, he has developed into a significant personality who personifies the tenacity of Gary O’Neil’s team as they strive for a European position. Toti, who made his Portugal debut in November, was recently rewarded with a new deal.
