Manchester United ‘lining up £40m move for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes’
Manchester United is reportedly targeting midfielder Joao Gomes of Wolverhampton Wanderers as a summer transfer target. The Red Devils are aiming to replace Casemiro.
The 23-year-old left Flamengo for Wolves in January of last year after the Premier League team outbid French powerhouse Lyon for his services.
Gomes has made 39 appearances in all competitions with his current team, tallying one assist and three goals.
In the meantime, the Brazilian has made 28 appearances for Gary O’Neil’s team in the 2023–24 campaign, scoring twice and dishing out one assist.
Gomes’s contract at Molineux expires in June 2028, with an additional year’s option. However, The Mirror claims Man United will press for Gomes’ signing during that time. The transfer window for this summer.
According to the source, with Casemiro most likely to leave, the 20-time English champions intend to pursue a defensive midfielder in the forthcoming transfer window.
Gomes, who is reportedly valued at £40 million, is reportedly the subject of Man United scouting, and the Red Devils are getting ready to make a move for him at the end of the season.
However, Wolves is rumored to be looking for Gomes’ replacement this summer, so the team may have competition from both Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.
The Brazilian gave a remarkable display for Wolves last month against Tottenham, helping O’Neil’s club win 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with two goals from him.
Casemiro, who is facing more time out with a muscular problem, has another two years left to run on his contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further 12 months.
The 32-year-old continues to be linked with a summer exit, though, with teams from Saudi Arabia believed to be keeping a close eye on his situation in Manchester.
Kobbie Mainoo is viewed as the future of the Man United midfield, but Christian Eriksen could join Casemiro in leaving the club this summer, while Sofyan Amrabat is unlikely to be signed on a permanent basis, having struggled to impress while on loan from Fiorentina.
Bruno Fernandes is also expected to remain a key player for the Red Devils next season, but Scott McTominay’s future continues to be called into question.
Man United are planning to be active this summer under new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, but the size of the club’s budget will be impacted if Champions League football is not secured for the 2024-25 campaign.
