Former Commanders DE Casey Toohill signs with the Bills
The Washington Commanders’ top five defensive ends were set to become free agents at the end of the previous campaign when the team launched. Washington traded starter defensive ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young during the NFL trade deadline in October.
Following the trades of Sweat and Young, the Commanders’ starting lineup consisted of James Smith-Williams, Casey Toohill, and Efe Obada, with youngsters K.J. Henry and Andre Jones Jr. filling in as reserves.
In order to rebuild the position this summer, Dorance Armstrong, Dante Fowler Jr., and Clelin Ferrell were signed via free agency by new general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn. Obada was indeed signed by Washington on a one-year contract.
On Tuesday, Toohill signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Bills, finding a new home.
In October of his rookie season, Toohill—a 2020 seventh-round draft selection by the Eagles—was grabbed off waivers by the Commanders. Over the course of the previous four seasons, he established himself as a reliable member of Washington’s rotations, appearing in 16 games with 14 starts in each of the previous three seasons.
In 2023, Toohill recorded a career-high five sacks. Over his career, Toohill has participated in 57 games and recorded 80 tackles, 20 quarterback hits, and seven sacks.
Williams is still able to sign free agents.
Casey Toohill has signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Bills, providing much-needed depth at defensive end, the team announced on Tuesday.
Toohill, 27, recently finished a season in which he led the Washington Commanders in sacks with five, a career best, while starting eight games. He ought to blend in perfectly if he can deliver Buffalo with that same level of output.
Toohill was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft; however, he was waived after making just one appearance in a team game. A day later, the Commanders claimed him off waivers, and although he never made much of an impact, he did develop into a reliable role player for the group.
