Cowboys restructure Dak Prescott’s contract, add $4 million in cap space
Although they haven’t renewed Dak Prescott’s contract, the Cowboys have made changes to it.
In order to free up cap space, the team changed Prescott’s $5 million roster bonus to a signing bonus, according to Field Yates of ESPN. Prescott’s contract was also amended to include void years, and as a result, the current season will have $4 million in cap space.
Prescott now has a $55.455 million cap number for the 2024 campaign, and the Cowboys will carry him on their cap even if he leaves after that season due to the void years.
Prescott would be on the roster while counting against the cap if he were to sign an extension, and the contract restructuring doesn’t prevent a deal of that nature from happening at some point this offseason. However, it’s unclear whether the talk of a new deal in Dallas would translate into actual action.
FRISCO-Dak Prescott’s contract has been moved by the Dallas Cowboys. Not “the contract move,” but some quick assistance none the less.
As we cover in the Fish Report and Fish Podcast below, there is a lot of controversy surrounding the Cowboys MVP quarterback at the moment in Cowboys Nation. Furthermore, none of that is resolved by this move.
However..
The organization decided to turn a $5 million roster bonus that was owed to Prescott into a signing bonus in order to free up cap space, as first reported by ESPN.
The $4 million in more room will help the Cowboys complete their recent little agreements. Please refer to the Cowboys Free Agency Scorecard. In addition, Prescott’s deal will have vacant years added to it. This might be significant as the two parties negotiate his long-term contract extension, which is set to expire at the end of this season.
After ballooning to $59.4 million, Prescott’s 2024 salary cap is now $55.455 million.
These unfilled years, which now extend until 2028, could cause issues if Dak isn’t signed by the end of the year and becomes a free agency in the spring of 2025. For example, it would be regrettable if he were to disappear in 2025, even though his cap number would still be close to $40 million.
