Lewis signs new deal, remains with Cowboys
Texas’s Frisco For the Dallas Cowboys, the first week of free agency is starting to gain momentum. After being largely idle throughout the opening few days of the season, they managed to sign linebacker Eric Kendricks from the San Francisco 49ers and keep cornerback Jourdan Lewis, one of their finest playmakers, on board.
After formally signing the new contract shortly after, the former Ed Block Courage Award winner has agreed to terms to stay in Dallas for a one-year contract through the 2024 season, thereby halting the departure of defensive talent to Dan Quinn and the Washington Commanders.
Only a few seasons prior, Lewis was selected in the third round out of Michigan after a challenging time finding the field for the Cowboys, and not due to a lack of skill, but rather because of Kris Richard’s disapproval of his diminutive size at cornerback.
In the end, Lewis would work his way up and make Rod Marinelli and Richard look dumb for ever questioning him. For a while, he was the team’s best (and only) defensive ballhawk and playmaker.
Since then, he has gone from being unnoticed to becoming a nickel cornerback breakout star, from suffering a catastrophic foot injury that almost ruined his career to overcoming it and returning to be one of the Cowboys’ key playmakers in 2023. He has been one of the team’s top defenders and a mentor for a while, and he still has a lot of impact years left in his profession.
His next one will be wearing a Cowboys uniform once more.
