Raiders Sign Gardner Minshew In 2024 NFL Free Agency | Raiders News & Reactions
Tom Pelissero reports that the Raiders are offering Gardner Minshew a $25 million, two-year contract that includes a $15 million guarantee.
Since moving away from Jacksonville in 2020, Minshew has never had the opportunity to start on Opening Day. He was in Philadelphia in 2021 and 2022 to support Jalen Hurts, and a few weeks after the organization signed Minshew in free agency, Anthony Richardson was picked in 2023. Based on his career statistics, Mishew hasn’t been a reliable fantasy player.
He took over in Jacksonville in 2019 following an injury to Nick Foles in Week 1. That year, he started 12 games and had his greatest fantasy season to date with 3271 passing yards and 21 touchdowns. He played in just 18 games between 2020 and 2022, starting just 12. His combined stats from those games add up to 3361 throwing yards and 25 touchdowns overall. As of last year the starter starting in Week 5, he amassed 3305 yards and 18 touchdowns in all. Once he assumed the starting role, he finished the season as the QB17.
Given his lackluster stats and the addition of Luke Getsy, his new offensive coordinator, and defensive head coach Antonio Pierce, it’s safe to assume that Minshew won’t be seen on many top-10 lists. When Getsy was in Chicago, he ran a pretty conservative offense, but part of that might have been a result of designing a scheme specifically for Justin Fields. Since his first season, Minshew has solidified like a statue, thus Getsy will have to alter the game in Las Vegas. Overall, Minshew and his gunslinger style might be more effective for his pass catchers in fantasy football than It serves his own interests.
The Disagreement in Fantasy Football
The consequences, which might begin in Indianapolis, could be negligible or disastrous. It is dependent upon two factors: Who do they hire as a backup and can Anthony Richardson remain healthy? After Richardson was lost by the Colts after four games in the previous season, Minshew took over and led the team to nine wins. Though not strong enough to qualify for the postseason, they still had a fighting shot. Sam Ehlinger now fills that backup position, so he can do better.
Minshew is going to be a sight for sore eyes in Las Vegas, following a season of Jimmy Garoppolo, Brian Hoyer, and Aidan O’Connell. He only started 13 games last season, but it was still 4 touchdowns fewer and 349 yards less than all of the Raiders quarterbacks combined. O’Connell was the last player still on the roster, thus a few years as a backup should be beneficial to him.
Michael Pittman recorded the highest yardage total of his career last season with the assistance of Minshew. You have to believe Minshew can improve on the 2023 stats after Davante Adams’ yardage took a big hit and Jakobi Meyers had the second-worst yards per reception of his career. In contrast to the Raiders’ 73 targets, the tight end was targeted more than 100 times by the Colts and Bears, Getsy’s former team, previous season. Michael Mayer, a tight end in his second year, ought to be more engaged than he was in his rookie season, according to the scheme.
With increased quantity and superior quality goals from 2024 should be a lot better for all pass catchers in Las Vegas because it will have a better quarterback.
