Stephen Jones REVEALS Dan Quinn Went OFF SCRIPT! Cowboys Defensive Star RETIRING?! |
News & Rumors
While fans speculated about well-known figures replacing Mike McCarthy for much of Sunday night, McCarthy’s successor as Dallas Cowboys coach may already be in the building.
Despite the Cowboys giving up 48 points in their defeat to the Packers on Sunday, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated said that Cowboys COO Stephen Jones has “long loved” defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Quinn is considered to be a top candidate for head coaching positions.
Quinn has turned down offers from teams the past two offseasons in order to stay in Dallas, but it would be shocking if he turned down a position as a coach this time. Given that Quinn served as an assistant coach in Seattle for two terms, most notably as the defensive coordinator, the Seahawks have been suggested as a logical choice
for their victory in Super Bowl XLVIII.
Following his second unexpected home playoff defeat in the previous three seasons, McCarthy is under pressure. On Sunday, the Cowboys were apathetic against a young Packers squad, falling down 27-0 before scoring their first points. Dallas is the only team in NFL history to win twelve games in a row without making it to the conference finals at least once.
After the game, owner Jerry Jones was evasive when questioned about McCarthy’s employment situation.
“I haven’t given it a single thought,” Jones said to the media. “I am aware of how difficult and significant our followers’ support was to us. What this loss means to me, once more, is not about how [or] why, about who did what, or anything of that like.
Such thing—during practically the whole game, the only thought that went through my head was, “Do we get to play here again next week?” rather than an appraisal of our play or strategy. We are unable to. That may have occurred at some point or in the manner described outside. I’ve only been thinking about that. It is true.”
McCarthy’s contract only lasts for one year, so Jones will need to decide quickly. McCarthy’s status as a lame duck for the Cowboys in 2024 doesn’t seem realistic, even if Jones let former coach Jason Garrett finish out his contract in 2020.
Nevertheless, the coaching industry is booming with
prominent names. Following the recent firings of Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll, and Mike Vrabel by their respective clubs, Jim Harbaugh of Michigan is reportedly thinking about returning to the NFL.
It is probable that Quinn, who already has supporters inside Cowboys facilities, would replace McCarthy as the team’s leader.
