Tom Brady’s ex-coach, Bruce Arians, explains why he didn’t draft Patrick Mahomes
Arians was the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals back in 2017
Bruce Arians recently explained to Peter King of NBC Sports why he was not able to pick the three-time winner, having guided Tom Brady to his final Super Bowl triumph with a commanding victory against the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes.
When Mahomes left the Cardinals for the Chiefs in 2017, Arians, 71, was the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. In order to choose him with the tenth pick, Andy Reid advanced.
The Cardinals had the 13th overall selection and Arians admitted he was stunned when Kansas City stole Mahomes from right under their noses.
“I was stunned,” Arians said. “I figured (the Chiefs) were a playoff team with a good quarterback in Alex Smith. I thought Pat was gonna fall to us.”
Sean Payton also wanted Patrick Mahomes
Former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton also wanted to draft Mahomes with the 11th pick, but settled for Marshon Lattimore
We really like this Patrick Mahomes kid,” Payton said inside the Saints’ draft room, per King. “He’s the steal of the draft. I’m not sure everyone knows that.”
Reid did well by moving up to 10th to draft Mahomes because he would have definitely been gone by the 27th pick, which was were the Chiefs were before trading draft capital to the Buffalo Bills.
