The Athletic’s latest survey won’t appeal to Raiders supporters.
One of the wildest head coaching cycles in recent memory seems to have finally come to an end. This offseason, a number of players, including Pete Carroll, Dan Quinn, Mike Vrabel, Jim Harbaugh, and Bill Belichick, were in and out of employment.
Now that all 32 head coaches for 2024 have been appointed, The Athletic asked league executives which hiring they thought was the greatest. Teams aren’t quite sold on the Raiders concept, spoiler alert. What they said was as follows:
NFL officials don’t like that Antonio Pierce was hired by the Raiders to be their head coach. “The only new hires who didn’t get any votes were Dave Canales and Antonio Pierce. Pierce took over as interim coach and was given a promotion after Midseason firing of Josh McDaniels. Under Pierce, the Raiders had a 5-4 record. Pierce was a well-liked leader among the players, who openly wished he had been hired.
Optimism permeates the workplace as the coaches’ good qualities are emphasized and mentioned as the reasons they were all hired, as is the case with new hiring each year. At some point, weaknesses will come to light, and the coaches’ capacity for adaptation will actually determine whether they succeed or fail in their roles. The majority won’t work out, history has shown.”
It’s not good to receive not a single vote, but at least he wasn’t the only one. Indeed, it appears that the players’ consent in the locker room would be more significant than the endorsement of league executives, many of whom might not even be managing or working for teams any longer, but that’s a discussion for a different day. The Raiders and Pierce would have like to operate under the impression that “literally no one believes in us” when the 2024 season begins, and now they do.
