The NFL states that the honor “recognizes an NFL player for his excellence on and off the field.” It was founded in 1970 and gave the name Walter Payton in honor of the renowned Chicago Bears running back in 1999.
One player “who has had a significant positive impact on his community” is nominated by each NFL team, according to the league.
The Walter Payton Man of the Year winner will receive a $250,000 donation to the charity of their choice; however, the 32 candidates will each receive a donation of up to $55,000.
