In 2024, the Philadelphia Eagles will play their first-ever game in South America when they open their regular season in Brazil. This will mark NFL history. The NFL International Series includes this game in an effort to grow the league’s fan base and global reach. On Monday, Commissioner Roger Goodell made the historic announcement.
Owner Jeffrey Lurie said the Eagles are honored to have been chosen for this historic show and that the team is looking forward to seeing Brazil, one of the most culturally varied countries in the world, and its warm, lively, and friendly atmosphere.
But who will the Eagles face in their first encounter in Brazil?
The Eagles’ opponent is still up in the air. The game is scheduled for Friday, September 6 in São Paulo’s Corinthians Arena, the same location as the Olympic Games in 2016 and the FIFA World Cup in 2014. Playing on the Friday night of the inaugural season is a distinctive approach to showcase the league’s global expansion and goals.
The Eagles are coming off a successful 2023 campaign in which they qualified for the playoffs as a wild-card club and finished second in the NFC East with an 11–6 record. They were defeated 32–9 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the opening round, where quarterback Jalen Hurts struggled against the defense of the reigning champs.
Later this spring, when the 2024 NFL schedule is made public, Philadelphia will learn who their opponent is and when kickoff is scheduled for the Brazil game. With an estimated 38 million sports enthusiasts in Brazil, the game is scheduled for prime time and will be televised globally.
