Steven Hughes, a senior at a Hampshire accounting firm, is taking a week off from audit duties to play in the World Amateur Snooker Tour in Albania.
Hughes, 22, a rising star in the green baize scene who works at HWB Chartered Accountants, is aiming to win the World Snooker Federation (WSF) Championship title, which qualifies him directly for the World Snooker Tour.
From February 3 to 11, Golem, a town south of Tirana, will host the open event. Of the 210 competitors, Hughes was placed in a difficult group of four.
Tony Knowles, who finished second in the world in 1984–85 behind Steve Davis, is one of the players competing in the tournament. Knowles qualified for the World Professional Snooker Championship semi-finals three times in the 1980s.
“I am eager to begin and have been counting down the days until the tournament starts,” Hughes declared. For amateur players, it’s truly the greatest event of their lives and a prelude to the professional game.

Hughes, who graduated from Barton Peveril College in Eastleigh at the age of seventeen, joined HWB in Chandlers Ford four years ago. He is currently preparing for his last ACA examinations, which he must pass to become completely qualified.
