The new defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers has been selected.
Green Bay interviewed a number of candidates throughout the week following Joe Barry’s firing last week, but one name stood out above the rest.
Former Boston College Eagles head coach Jeff Hafley, who led the team to a 22-26 record in his four years as coach, is the next DC.
Prior to that, he assisted in the development of Chase Young and Jeff Okudah while serving as Ohio State’s co-defensive coordinator.
Hafley has experience as an NFL coach. He worked as the defensive backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers from 2016 to 2018 and as the secondary coach for the Cleveland Browns from 2014 to 2015.
Hafley did not interview for the position and was not rumored to be a target for DC, therefore everyone was startled by this selection.
Hafley, however, is a defensive backs coach with experience, and it is hoped that he will improve a defense that struggled under Joe Barry.
The fans shared their opinions about the change.
It appears that Jeff Hafley prefers man-to-man coverage over zone coverage in his defensive strategy. This is good news because, rather than pressuring turnovers, Green Bay has spent the better part of two decades letting teams complete simple passes.
Hafley stated as much in 2019, and as of right now, we’re waiting on him to develop a ball-hawking secondary that induces turnovers.
Defense-wise, Green Bay’s problem in the past has been that they haven’t played both coverages. The matchup zone was a favorite spot for the last four defensive coordinators. Zone coverage has the drawback of allowing a cunning quarterback to pick up easy completions, which makes first and second downs easier to handle.
Although Joe Barry didn’t put these gifted defensive players in the right scheme, Brian Gutekunst nevertheless drafted them. This defense can pressure the quarterback and cause errors with the appropriate plan.
In Green Bay, anticipation for the Jeff Hafley era is over the sky.To arrange for Green Bay Packers players or alumni to make a business appearance or promote a product, contact Mayfield Sports Marketing at 262-366-8188.
