CONGRATULATION: Philadelphia Eagles celebrate their top star on his
After a promising finale to their 2021/22 season, the Philadelphia Eagles attacked the summer to retool and upgrade, and it resulted to a magnificent 14-3 performance in 2022/23.
They destroyed the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants in the playoffs, but they were eventually unsuccessful at the very last hurdle. In Super Bowl LVII, the Kansas City Chiefs led by superhero Patrick Mahomes defeated them 38–35.
For the birds, what now? Will they still be the top in the NFC? Was the previous season just too amazing to make again?
large losses
NFL clubs watch as their best players and coaches are taken advantage of by rival teams in free agency and the coaching carousel following any successful and fruitful season.
In an unusual instance, though, head coach Nick Sirianni bid both of his coordinators goodbye. After relocating to Indianapolis, offensive coordinator Shane Steichen plans to support Anthony Richardson, the new quarterback for the Colts. Jonathan Gannon, the defensive coordinator, is leaving for a major reconstruction project in Arizona.
With former quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson hoping to keep working with quarterback Jalen Hurts and sustain a top-five assault, the offensive transfer should go smoothly.
But it’s reasonable to anticipate difficulties on the defensive end of the ball. Philadelphia generated an astounding 70 sacks during the previous season while allowing the second-fewest yards per game in the league. However, it is said that the Eagles passed on their main coaching target, Gannon, and instead settled on Sean Desai, the defensive assistant for the Seahawks, after Gannon’s abrupt departure to Arizona.
The Eagles lost the most players to free agency this offseason on the defensive end of the ball. Outstanding defensive tackle Javon Hargrave left to NFC foes San Francisco. Desai will be working with a new bunch of players because both starting linebackers (TJ Edwards and Kyzir White) and starting safeties (CJ Gardner-Johnson and Marcus Epps) departed in free agency. How will they measure up to the exceptional unit from the previous year?
Although running back Miles Sanders had his most successful season in 2022 and guard Isaac Seumalo had excellent, consistent play, Philadelphia did lose several important offensive players, but the attack appears more potent than the defense.
Important returnees
The Eagles have been able to hold onto their key players with the signing of one-year contracts by Jason Kelce, Brandon Graham, and Fletcher Cox to return to Philadelphia. Hurts’ five-year, $255 million contract, which made him the most paid player in the league at the time, implies there is plenty of stability in key sections of the roster of course, there was never any chance he would leave.
This season, four of the five offensive line starters from the previous campaign will return to the field. Seumalo’s replacement at right guard will be Cam Jurgens, a second-round choice from the previous campaign who has spent a year studying under famed O-line coach Jeff Stoutland.
With the return of Hurts and his top three receivers, Dallas Goedert, DeVonta Smith, and AJ Brown, the offense should once again rank among the best in the league.
The defense is counting on some progress and a young movement. The Eagles are heavily depending on second-year Georgia Bulldogs Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean, who start at defensive tackle and linebacker, respectively, but also secured cornerback James Bradberry to a new three-year contract. They still have Pro Bowl talent in Haason Reddick and Darius Slay.
A varied assortment of additions
The Eagles want to “buy low” on skilled veterans and see who strikes before using their trade power to maximize their draft selections, as has been the strategy for the past several seasons.
