Christian McCaffrey is traded by the Carolina Panthers to the San Francisco 49ers, subject to a physical exam.
CNN — The San Francisco 49ers will receive running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers, subject to a physical examination. In exchange, the Panthers will receive a number of draft picks, including second, third, and fourth round selections in 2023 and a fifth-round pick in 2024.
After being selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, McCaffrey has had an amazing and extended tenure with the Panthers.
In 2019, he ran a career-high 1,387 yards and led the league in yards from scrimmage (2,392). It was his greatest year to date.
After that, injuries in 2020 and 2021 restricted his playing time; but, this season, the 26-year-old has stayed mostly healthy, finishing the NFL in 12th place with 85 carries, 13th place with 393 running yards, 31st place with 43 targets, and 19th place with 33 catches.
Due to the team’s lack of form, the organization sacked head coach Matt Rhule earlier this month, raising questions about McCaffrey’s future.
“Thank you, Run CMC,” was the tweet the Panthers sent out on Thursday in appreciation for the running back.
He will go back to the Bay Area, where he completed his collegiate education at Stanford, where he was the 2015 Heisman Trophy runner-up.
When the 49ers meet the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, McCaffrey could have a little part to play for his new club.
