Purdy breaks the record for the 49ers’ single-season throwing yards.
Matt Maiocco and Jennifer Lee Chan talk about quarterback Brock Purdy’s reaction to his performance in San Francisco’s Christmas defeat to the Baltimore Ravens, which ended in a 33-19 score.
On the 49ers’ single-season passing chart, Brock Purdy—the No. 262 selection in the 2022 NFL Draft—is now ranked first.
In Sunday’s 27-10 victory over the Washington Commanders, the quarterback passed Jeff Garcia, who threw for 4,278 yards in 2000, for the team single-season record with a 5-yard throw to tight end George Kittle close to the goal line.
Just 229 yards separated Purdy and the record going into the game, and it looked like he could need another week to break it until he found Brandon Aiyuk down the right sideline for a 38-yard gain to open the fourth quarter.
Purdy ended the drive with a scramble-fueled touchdown pass to Aiyuk. On San Francisco’s subsequent drive, he broke Garcia’s franchise record.
Purdy became only the sixth player in NFL history to have a passer rating of 120 or more in eight or more games throughout a season after finishing 22 of 28 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions and a 124.7 passer rating. That achievement was also shared by Aaron Rodgers (10 games in 2020), Tom Brady (8 games in 2007), Philip Rivers (8 games in 2008), and Matt Ryan (8 games in 2016).
NFL MVP awards were given to Brady, Rodgers, and Ryan in the seasons in which they were awarded. Purdy might too, since he’s had one of the finest seasons of any 49ers quarterback in history, despite his four-interception meltdown on Christmas.
Purdy’s big-play skills enabled him to start the 49ers’ season and become the record-holder in his 16th game.
