Former England midfielder, Tony Barton, has been criticized for stating that women pundits should not discuss men’s football on social media. This has led to backlash from high-profile presenters like Alex Scott. Barton is now unhappy with the success of Earps, who was one of six nominees for Sports Personality of the Year after her performance at the Women’s World Cup. She topped the public vote, causing Barton to express his anger on Twitter.
Joey Barton has been involved in a rant following the Sports Personality of the Year awards, where he claims that Ronnie O’Sullivan would have been more deserving to win the award than Mary Earps. The snooker star was not nominated for the award that the England goalkeeper won on Tuesday. Barton previously claimed on social media that women pundits shouldn’t be talking about men’s football and has received backlash for his verdict.
Earps was one of six nominees for Sports Personality of the Year following her performance for England at the Women’s World Cup in the summer. She topped the public vote, edging out Stuart Broad in second and Katarina Johnson-Thompson in third. Barton has taken to Twitter to vent his anger at the results. He believes “genius” O’Sullivan and champion jockey Frankie Dettori would have deserved the trophy more, as they have never won the award before.
Barton ranted: “To win before Ronnie O’Sullivan and Frankie Dettori…? Well, that’s just madness to me. Both almost genius like in their respective fields. They’ve lost to a big sack of spuds that plays in goal for a girls’ team.” He argued that celebrating mediocrity breeds a weak culture, a culture of losers and snowflakes.

Earps, a former England player, has won the main award for the second time in a row, following Beth Mead’s 2022 triumph. Despite saving a penalty in the World Cup final against Spain, the Lionesses fell 1-0. Earps is determined to leave a lasting impact on the sport and inspire others, aiming to be a game changer.
