Cardinals TE in free agency should be signed by the 49ers as a key replacement.
The San Francisco 49ers are being pushed to sign a free-agent tight end from the Arizona Cardinals after their victory against them on Sunday. The 49ers aren’t exactly focusing on 2024 just yet, of course. But by replenishing their roster, the top NFL clubs maintain their position.
Arizona TE Geoff Swaim has been identified by Bleacher Report’s NFL staff as a prospect San Francisco could consider in 2024. With reference to Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner’s impending exits, Swaim is recommended as a wise successor.
“San Francisco will need to acquire some depth at tight end in the offseason, as Charlie Woerner and Ross Dwelley are set to reach free agency. Even if they did invest a third-round pick in Cameron Latu in April of last year, Latu is
Due to his exceptional blocking abilities, Swaim is a seasoned veteran who has participated for several teams. The 49ers couldn’t do any better when it comes to acquiring a backup who is exclusively committed to that duty.
Swaim’s NFL Career
The Dallas Cowboys selected Swaim in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft after he played college sports at Texas. As one might expect, a TE with a blocking emphasis was hesitant to become involved in games as a rookie.
According to Pro Football Reference, Swaim only made 13 appearances in his first two seasons with Dallas. It wasn’t until his fourth season in 2018 that the now-30-year-old recorded 10+ targets or catches; he grabbed 26 passes for 242 yards and a score.
In 2019, Swaim signed a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, marking his first team move. However, Swaim was traded to the Tennessee Titans after only one season, where he would go on to have his second-most productive year to date. In 2021, the former Longhorn hauled in 31 passes for 210 yards and three scores.
In 2023, Swaim returned to the NFC, joining the Cardinals. With ten catches, he has now amassed 94 receiving yards. This past Sunday, after failing to register a grab in Arizona’s first game against the 49ers, Swaim hauled in a 26-yard reception.
