Ange Postecoglou admits Tottenham will miss Son Heung-min’s leadership when he leaves for the Asian Cup, as he reveals the club are ‘still working’ on finalising a departure date for their talisman ahead of the tournament….
Before Son Heung-min leaves for the Asian Cup, Tottenham is attempting to make the most of him. Ange Postecoglou knows that both his goals and his leadership will be missed.
Son’s squad ended their Premier League losing streak last weekend with a 4-1 victory over Newcastle, to which he provided one goal and two assists. However, there are rumors that the club captain would travel to Abu Dhabi to train with South Korea following Tottenham’s match against Bournemouth on December 31.
According to the schedule, the 31-year-old would miss many Premier League games, including Manchester United at Old Trafford, as well as Burnley’s FA Cup third-round visit and maybe a fourth-round play. Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are scheduled to compete in the Africa
Cup of Nations for Senegal and Mali, respectively, during this winter.
Postecoglou, who is already managing a lengthy number of ailments, added to his list of potential absences when he stated, “For the foreseeable future, that’s where we’re going to be,” prior to Spurs’ match against Nottingham Forest on Friday night.
I’m not surprised by anything about Sonny. He and I go back a long way. His assumption of a leadership position here is the one thing that’s new for him. He’s adapted to that nicely.
‘All those players will be a big loss for us. But that’s been the story of our season. We’ve had to cope without significant players.’
Postecoglou appreciates the importance of the Asian Cup, having won it with Australia in 2015. On when Son will depart, he said: ‘We’re still working on that.’
On his squad strength, the Spurs boss added: ‘That’s dependent on where we’re at from a squad perspective.
‘Eight guys out, at least seven won’t be back for a little while, you’re left with a fairly thin squad where you can’t rotate players. The way we play is physically and mentally demanding.’
