Ronnie O’Sullivan: Seven-time world champion says he was asked to ‘consider future’ by governing body….
In a recent letter, seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan claims the governing body of snooker asked him “to consider” his future in the sport.
O’Sullivan, 47, is going to face consequences for openly criticizing the World Snooker Tour for how it handled the situation involving five players participating in a Macau exhibition event earlier this season.
Amidst the row, he has also threatened to give up snooker.
O’Sullivan recently made some remarks that have prompted a response from the WST.
The Englishman remarked, “The letter they sent me has not been very nice.”
“I believe I’ve contributed significantly to this game. You know what, we think you’ve done great for the game and we love what you give, is probably what I’d expect someone to say.
The five players—Luca Brecel, the current world champion; John Higgins and Mark Selby, the four-time world champions; Thepchaiya Un-Nooh; and Ali Carter—were spared disciplinary action when the Macau event was rescheduled for December with WST’s approval.
O’Sullivan, the current world number one, supported the players in their October dispute with the WST.
More recently, when he and other players meet with snooker bosses during the UK Championship, Mark Allen of Northern Ireland stated he was hoping for a “peaceful resolution” to contract concerns.
For celebrities like O’Sullivan, who draw sizable audiences to their performances, specially planned events in East Asia present a lucrative opportunity, and he thinks that contracts to play on the main professional tour
“Sharing a slice of cake with 130 players [on the main tour] is difficult,” O’Sullivan stated.
“They pay me ten or fifteen times as much in China as I can get paid to play here. I have to consider what is best for my family at this point in my career. I desire for them to lead comfortable lives.”
