Police have launched an investigation into the tragic death of former NHL star Adam Johnson.
The world was shocked on Sunday when it emerged the 29-year-old had died after a collision with a rival player during an Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) match in the UK.
Johnson, a player on the Nottingham Panthers, had his throat slashed by the skate of Matt Petgrave of the Sheffield Steelers in traumatic scenes that unfolded in front of a crowd of around 8000 at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena.
Fans, who had seen the incident described as “one in a million” said Petgrave was “absolutely distraught” as the incident unfolded.
The EIHL later confirmed the devastating news, describing it as a “freak accident”.
However, footage has now emerged of the moment where Petgrave collided with Johnson, flooring his opponent.
The match was stopped in the 35th minute as Johnson received emergency treatment on the ice
Shortly after the accident, players reportedly formed a ring around Johnson while he received treatment before protective screens were raised.
He was later taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital while the Panthers tweeted shortly after the incident that spectators had “been asked to leave the building due to a major medical emergency”.
