Ross Stewart’s summertime sale by Sunderland was the “right” move.
Kristjaan Speakman stated that he has no regrets about offloading the striker after receiving a “good offer” during the Red & White Army Q&A session.
In 2021, Ross Stewart left Ross County to join Sunderland for a fee of less than £3,000,000.
Charlie Wyke was the Scot’s backup at first, but Stewart took over after his old teammate moved to Wigan Athletic.
With an amazing 26 goals in 49 games, the “important” 27-year-old was a major factor in Sunderland’s promotion to the Championship.
Stewart scored 10 goals in just 13 games as his form carried over into the second division. But in January, the forward sustained an Achilles injury, which has kept him out of action ever since.
Stewart’s contract was scheduled to expire in the summer of 2020, so his future was unclear.
The Scotland international was linked to several teams, but because of his injury, it appeared that he would stay on Wearside for the summer.
Stewart did, however, ultimately manage to finalize a £10 million relocation to the south coast thanks to late interest from Southampton.
Despite the lack of an experienced goal scorer for the Black Cats, Speakman has maintained that selling him was the right move.
During yesterday’s Q&A, David Bruce, Steve Davison, and Kyril-Louis Dreyfus joined Speakman.
Was selling Ross Stewart the right move?
Even though it was difficult to see such a gifted striker go from Sunderland, the move was the right one.
The Scottish player had been sidelined for almost a full year due to injury, and it was uncertain when he would fully recover, let alone return to his peak.
If Sunderland hadn’t won promotion, he might have left for nothing in January or perhaps gone abroad for free the following summer.
It was a great deal to earn £10 million for an injured player who still had a year left on his contract.
