At the Sheffield Steelers vs. Nottingham Panthers game at Utilita Arena Sheffield, a mid-ice collision that was seen by about 8,000 fans resulted in a “major medical emergency” for one of the players.
The BBC reports that the player took a skate and the blade seriously cut his neck.
On X, the Nottingham Panthers posted the following: “33:47 – A serious injury stops the game. Panthers 1, Steelers 2.
The team announced shortly after, saying, “Due to a major medical emergency, fans have been asked to leave the building.”
Attending the game, journalist Peter Spencer wrote on X, stating, “A collision in mid-ice badly hurt a Nottingham Panthers player.” At this point, screens are up around him, players are forming a ring around him, and paramedics are on the ice.
Horrible scenes at Sheffield Arena right now. The time frame is over.
The Daily Mail reported that Yorkshire Ambulance Service stated they received a call at approximately 8:20 p.m. and that one man was transported to the hospital.
Fans expressed their shock at the accident on social media.
“In all the time I’ve watched hockey, I’ve never seen such an incident,” one commenter said. My sympathies are with the player’s friends, family, and teammates, and I sincerely hope he is okay.
An additional fan commented, “Awful! The worst thing I have ever seen in my 37 years of hockey watching.”
