Michael Skubala, the manager of Leeds United’s U21 team, revealed to Leeds Live that Leo Hjelde sustained an injury during the Premier League International Cup victory over Hertha Berlin and left the game before the hour mark.
Leeds defeated Nice 2-0 to win their second match of the tournament and all three points. Keenan Carole, Lew Bate, and Mateo Joseph—who is still not starting for the first team—scored goals.
The 21s defeated a Hertha team that featured first-team players 3-1 with ease. Hjelde suffered an Achilles injury while playing for Norway 21 and missed the first half of the match.
In a statement on Tuesday, Farke stated that Hjelde is now healthy following his achilles injury; however, considering that he has missed the previous six league games, a recall to the senior matchday squad was always improbable.
But, on Tuesday night, Hjelde came off on 59 minutes. Skubala spoke after the 3-1 win over Hertha, and he reported the ex-Celtic man has suffered an impact injury – picking up a knock to his hip last night.
“We wanted to get him through some good minutes and he probably came off a little bit early. He got whacked in the hip, either a dead hip or just a little bit sore, so we didn’t want to risk it,” Skubala said.
“So we tried to get him off as soon as we could to look after him. The plan was to get him more minutes but he got injured, got a whack,” the Leeds Under-21 manager continued, as quoted by Leeds Live
Leo Hjelde, a player for Leeds, sustains an injury during the team’s 21 victory over Hertha Hjelde has had a challenging season. Having started the match against Cardiff, he was substituted at halftime and hasn’t played in the League again. On the left flank, Sam Byram has surpassed him as the preferred option.
Hjelde will only fall farther down the hierarchy as Stuart Dallas and Junior Firpo near their comebacks from injuries. The Norwegian is positioned behind Pascal Struijk and Liam Cooper at center back.
