A largely dire game had just a couple of bizarre VAR checks to brighten it up until Dele Alli scored what looked like being the winner just after the hour mark.
The huge turning point arrived 11 minutes from time when Gomes crumpled after a foul by Son sent him tumbling into Serge Aurier and causing what looked a horrendous injury.
Son himself, and a number of the players close to the incident, were visibly shaken by the injury, with referee Martin Atkinson then showing the South Korean a straight red card as he disappeared down the tunnel almost in tears
Substitute Cenk Tosun popped up with the goal in the 97th minute that ended up giving the hosts a point as they could not find another against the ten men of Spurs.
It meant that the Toffees still haven’t managed to come from behind to win a game under manager Marco Silva.
The point suited neither side really, with Spurs moving up just a place into 11th but already way behind in the top four race – and Everton still languishing down in 17th with Southampton and Norwich, the two sides directly below them, to play next.
Everton has only gained four points from their last seven league games (W1 D1 L5); prior to this run, they had 12 points (W3 D3 L1). Since Alexis Sanchez scored for Arsenal against Burnley in January 2017, Everton’s goal came after 96 minutes and 57 seconds. Tottenham Hotspur has lost their last 12 Premier League away games (D3 L9), with their most recent victory coming on January 20th.
Spurs have now played 82 straight Premier League games without drawing a nil-nil; the only two teams to have longer runs are Man Utd (114 games from May 1999 to May 2002) and Ipswich Town (87 games from August 1994 to May 2001).
With 13 appearances for Sunderland and 87 for Everton, Jordan Pickford of Everton became just the 22nd player in Premier League history to appear in 100 straight games. This is the first time it has happened since Darren Fletcher (112 between February 2015 and December 2017).
Only Darius Vassell (46 games) and James Milner (53 games) have scored more goals without losing than Tottenham’s Alli, who has not lost any of his 39 Premier League games.
In his last three Premier League games against Everton, Son Heung-min of Spurs has directly contributed to six goals, scoring three and dishing out three assists.
Since losing while in charge of Southampton in December 2013, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has gone undefeated in his past 12 games against Everton (W7 D5).
With a duration of 104 minutes and 52 seconds, this match surpassed all other Premier League games played this season by four minutes.
