Southampton striker Ross Stewart is yet to make an appearance for the St. Mary’s outfit following his £10m arrival from Sunderland in the summer.
When healthy and available, Southampton striker Ross Stewart could “transform” the St. Mary’s team’s offensive. In an interview with GIVEMESPORT, writer Dean Jones mentions a Saints player who stands to gain from the summer signing’s comeback to action.
Despite a difficult beginning to his time on the south coast, Russell Martin is determined to propel the team back into the Premier League. The former Swansea City manager has been under fire for the past month, but he still believes his team can turn things around and continue to contend for a spot in the Championship play-offs at the end of the campaign.
Stewart has not yet played for Southampton.
Deadline Day was a hectic day for Southampton, with both possible departures and arrivals. On the last day of the transfer window, it appeared as though the Saints would lose striker Che Adams to Wolverhampton Wanderers on a season-long loan. Nevertheless, The Athletic disclosed that Southampton had thwarted Adams’ transfer to Molineux with seven hours left in the window.
A potential £15 million obligation and option were included in the loan for Wolves to sign the center-forward permanently. Nonetheless, the 27-year-old stayed at St. Mary’s because it was thought to be essential to Southampton’s chances of promotion.
In the meantime, Southampton strengthened their striker roster when they signed Stewart, a center forward for Sunderland, for £10 million. The Scottish attacker, speaking to HampshireLive after his arrival, expressed his happiness about getting a transfer to St. Mary’s:
“Southampton is an enormous team.” It has been a Premier League team in recent years, so coming down here to play football for a team that will be challenging at the top of the league is a big challenge for me.
But for Stewart, things haven’t turned out the way he had hoped. The 27-year-old hasn’t played for the Saints since moving to the south coast more than a month ago. After sustaining a serious Achilles injury in January during an FA Cup match at Fulham, he hasn’t played for Southampton or Sunderland.
Jones recently made the suggestion to GIVEMESPORT that, in the event that Stewart is match-fit, Adams would be lower on the hierarchy. The Saints supporters, however, are hoping that Stewart will soon be able to return to action in anticipation of making his Southampton debut later this month.
