The Gir Forest and additional protected areas in the districts of Junagadh, Amreli, Gir Somnath, and Bhavnagar in Gujarat’s Saurashtra region are home to the world’s only population of endangered Asiatic lions.
Forest officials claim that during a fight, the two carnivores—a lioness and a leopard cub—fell into a well in Hathasani village, Amreli district, on Monday, where they were discovered dead. In a different incident, forest officials reported that a “sub-adult lion” that was hurt on Friday in Uchaiya village, Amreli, after being struck by a goods train, has passed away.
On Monday morning, the carcasses of a lioness and a leopard cub were discovered floating in the well of a farmer named Ashwin Shingala’s agricultural farm in Hathasani village, Savarkundla taluka of Amreli. There is no one using the open well. However, Rajdeepsinh Zala, Deputy Conservator of Forests of Gir (east) Wildlife Division, told The Indian Express that the farmer discovered the two carnivore carcasses floating in the well after discovering a bad smell coming from it on Monday morning. The village is located in Gir (east) Wildlife Division’s revenue area, which is part of the Savarkundla range.
