In the upcoming transfer windows, Liverpool may try to bolster their midfield even further. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided an important update regarding their goal of fielding a “one-man army” in the middle of the park.

Even though the midfield was the only area of emphasis, Anfield’s summer transfer window proved to be quite busy. The Reds struggled mightily in that position all season long as Jordan Henderson and Fabinho seemed to be getting older and were unable to cover as much ground as they once could.
Jurgen Klopp brought in Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch to help with the injuries that were plaguing Thiago, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
It has made a noticeable difference so far this season, with new legs helping to alleviate those previous issues (Szoboszlai has been especially impressive). However, this does not mean that more additions are not necessary in the middle of the park.
The hope is that a new defender comes in at some point in the near future, too, in order to provide Klopp with more options there, but for now, another midfielder looks to be on the cards.
In a recent transfer update, Romano informed Caught Offside that reports of an extended Borussia Monchengladbach deal were unfounded and that Liverpool is still in talks with Manu Kone:
“Kone may also be someone to keep an eye on in January because, contrary to rumors elsewhere, he hasn’t actually signed a new contract with Borussia Monchengladbach.
“Kone may depart in 2024, but his current contract is good until 2026. Despite interest in him during the summer, there are currently no contacts or negotiations underway with any other clubs, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
“Juventus and Liverpool were the two teams that gave him some thought before deciding not to contact him again in August. We’ll have to wait and see what transpires in 2024, but the player is still willing to try something new, and his asking price is probably between €40 and €45 million.”
According to a recent 90min report, Kone’s transfer to Liverpool is still possible, and Romano’s update only serves to fan the flames of the possibility that he will join the Reds in January.
Given that football talent scout Jacek Kulig called the 22-year-old a “fantastic” player and described him as a “one-man army in midfield” due to his all-around dominance in his position, Klopp may find him to be an exciting option.
