Carlos Alcaraz was a target for Everton before he signed with Southampton.
The Athletic claims that the Toffees considered him to be one of Argentina’s top prospects but were unable to match the Saints’ bid.
Alcaraz progressed through Racing Club’s youth systems before making his senior debut in 2020. Before being acquired by Southampton in January for £12 million, the midfielder scored seven goals in the Argentine Primera Division.
Before Southampton was demoted to the Championship, Alcaraz had 18 appearances in the Premier League, scoring four goals and dishing out two assists.
He has only started five games in the second division and hasn’t yet contributed with a goal, but in the summer, teams like Brighton and AC Milan were quite interested in signing him.
The Saints had initially given the 20-year-old a £25 million valuation, but they have now been able to sign him to a fresh five-year deal.
Carlos Alcaraz was overspent.
Alcaraz had evidently impressed Everton while he was playing in South America, but it is said that they were unable to pay his £12 million asking price.
When the Toffees just got Ellis Simms back from his loan with Sunderland in January, they made quite plain their financial difficulties from the previous season.
Carlos Alcaraz was unable to stop Southampton from being relegated, but it is obvious that he is making an impression on many people because top clubs are showing interest in him.
Sean Dyche’s team may have required the ‘excellent’ creative midfielder to supplement their weak attack, but there is no use dwelling on the past because the club would never have spent the money to bring in such a player.
