According to Brian Robb of masslive.com, Van Gundy will work as a “Senior Consultant” for the Boston Celtics, marking their most recent move in a series of changes:
“Van Gundy is the latest addition to Boston’s staff, which has included a number of notable assistant hires this offseason, such as Sam Cassell and Charles Lee,” stated Robb.
The renowned organization’s basketball operations will be handled by the 61-year-old Van Gundy.
For the entire life of the league, the Celtics have been a top-tier organization. They’ve kept up their winning ways lately, making it to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2018 and 2020 as well as the NBA Finals in 2022.
Following the team’s high-profile off-season acquisition of All-Star Jrue Holiday, Van Gundy will be assimilated into the group and allegedly split his time between the Celtics and their G League club.
What Van Gundy Can Offer the Celtics
Following the departure of his predecessor Pat Riley, Van Gundy guided the Knicks to the 1999 NBA Finals and was crucial to their ongoing success in the latter part of the 1990s.
He then coached Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, two future Hall of Famers, for the Houston Rockets from 2003 to 2007.
Van Gundy has a substantial coaching background, and his work as a game analyst for ESPN on ABC alongside Mike Breen and Mark Jackson helped establish his reputation among viewers.
