T ottenham are a confident defender. Toby Alderweireld avoided ligament injury before undergoing a scan on his damaged knee.
Spurs thought Alderweireld had suffered a catastrophic injury when he was carried off in the second half of Saturday’s 1-1 draw at West Brom, after colliding with teammate Jan Vertonghen.
However, as Alderweireld prepared for the examination, the initial signs were that he had merely taken a heavy blow and would not be out for long.
Alderweireld, 27, did not travel to Germany for Tuesday’s Champions League encounter against Bayer Leverkusen and is unlikely to play in the club’s next three games, which are at Bournemouth on Saturday, Liverpool in the EFL Cup three days later, and Leicester at home on October 29.
The player is understood to be hopeful that he has avoided serious injury, and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is likely to release more information later today.
Eric Dier is expected to replace Alderweireld in the team. Although Dier proved himself as a holding midfielder last season, he grew up as a centre-back and started his first season with Tottenham.
