Archie Gray, the Leeds United midfielder who was stretchered off during Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa, has fortunately sprained rather than fractured his ankle. After the game, head coach Jesse Marsch provided an update to the media.
Midway through the second half in Brisbane, John McGinn’s studs were planted into the 16-year-old’s ankle. The boy collapsed on the floor after the challenge, and he was carried away with his right leg in a brace.
According to Marsch, the severity will be determined in the coming days, but there was initial hope that it was a sprain rather than a break. “We’re hoping it’s not too bad,” he remarked.

“When they assessed him after the game, he was in some pain at first.” They’re hoping nothing is damaged and it’s just a sprained ankle. We’ll see how serious it is in the next days, but hopefully not too awful.”
Gray has been one of the stories of the summer so far. The 16-year-old’s impressive displays have made him a part of the senior squad for next season in Marsch’s eyes.
