Malcolm Brogdon’s fate appears to have been decided by the Boston Celtics.
The Celtics are not considering trading Brogdon, at least not any more than they are considering trading any other player on their roster, according to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe this week. However, Himmelsbach did admit that something “just feels slightly off” about the Brogdon-Celtics situation.
The seasoned guard Brogdon was reportedly upset with the Celtics earlier this week, according to a rumor we heard. In a three-team deal in June, the franchise had agreed to transfer Brogdon to the LA Clippers, but the deal ultimately failed due to serious health concerns with Brogdon. That is probably what has Brogdon so upset about Boston.
However, there is currently a compelling case for the Celtics to keep Brogdon on the team and merely attempt to mend their relationship with him. The Celtics ultimately sent Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies in a different trade after the Brogdon to the Clippers deal fell through (creating more playing time and touches in the backcourt). The NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award was earned by Brogdon last season with a strong 15-4-4 line off the bench (before a right forearm injury prevented him from contributing in the playoffs). He still has two years left on his deal.
If the Celtics are unable to make amends with Brogdon, it appears they would have an intriguing Plan B at point guard. However, Boston seems to want to run it back with Brogdon as training camp approaches.
