During a disastrous first half for Liverpool, Arsenal icon Martin Keown didn’t have much good to say about Alexis Mac Allister.
Again playing defense against Wolves, the attacking midfielder had a lot of work to do after falling down 1-0 in the first half.
Liverpool went on to win the game 3-1, but without the midfielder.
So poor was Mac Allister, that manager Jurgen Klopp called time on his afternoon early, hauling him off at half time for Luis Diaz.
That would have come as no surprise to talkSPORT’s Keown, who had already pinpointed the no.10 as an issue.
“Another mistake from Mac Allister,” he said. “You didn’t see him do this in a Brighton jersey.
“These are the basics. I wondered if he was going to drag his man down.
“Mac Allister would be better higher up the midfield. Liverpool are trying to force it through the midfield where Wolves are compact.”
Mac Allister was one of four midfield signings by Klopp this summer, joining Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo through the door.
Former Stuttgart man Endo is the only specialist defensive midfielder, though, but so far Mac Allister has filled that role.
